Fiat wants China venture to stick to 2010 target-CEO
TURIN, Italy, July 2 (Reuters) - Italian car maker Fiat
wants its Chinese joint venture to stick to a
production target of 300,000 vehicles by 2010, Chief Executive
Sergio Marchionne said on Monday, after it fell short of 2006
goals.
"We want to be able to produce 300,000 units by 2010. If
they follow us on this, that will be good, if not, we'll see
(what to do)," Marchionne told reporters on the margins of an
event.
Sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Saturday
that Fiat could mend its troubled relationship with Nanjing
Automobile after the local government interceded.
Marchionne said in May he was unhappy with Nanjing
Automobile -- which has been relaunching the MG brand which Fiat
does not own -- and was considering scrapping its alliance.
The venture had sales of 31,300 autos in 2006, short of
Marchionne's target of 40,000.
Turning to Fiat's home market, Marchionne said Fiat's share
of the Italian market was above 30 percent in June and the car
maker had met objectives in the second quarter.
"I don't have any bad news for you. We are making the
figures we set out," he said.
Official figures from the Transport Ministry on June car
sales are due on Monday at around 1600 GMT.
Shares in Fiat were up 0.77 percent at 22.25 euros by 1149
GMT, in line with the DJ Stoxx European autos index .
