Photography Festival focuses on contemporary photography
SINGAPORE: The month-long Photography Festival, with the theme 'Wanderings', is back for the sixth time this July, and many of the exhibits reflect the odd and the quirky. Shirlene Noordin, Organiser of Photography Festival and Director of Phish Communications, said: "One of the reasons we've called it 'Wanderings' is because it's not only about photography. We want to invite the audience to come in to wander through the photographs and hopefully they'll take them to different places without ever leaving home." Over 400 works are on display at City Hall and among them are 80 snapshots of Paris from the collections of five institutions from the city. Over 200 works of award-winning photographer Martin Parr are also on the walls. And perhaps the most jarring are the pictures that tell the story of the working class in the UK, back in the 1970s. Similarly raw images are also favoured by Matthew Teo, one of two young Singapore talents featured in the festival.
Mr Teo said: "I'm showing people a side of Singapore that is rarely seen – the grit and grime, the raw essence of youth. I'm showing you the crass side of Singapore and I'm actually showing you a slice of my life as well. These are very personal images and they are people I've known for eight years." Organisers hope the exhibitions will promote the understanding of photography as an art form in Singapore.
