IAEA head optimistic about mission to monitor N. Korea nuke shutdown

(Kyodo) _ The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency said Thursday he is optimistic about the U.N. nuclear watchdog's mission to verify the shutdown of North Korea's nuclear facilities under a nuclear disarmament deal.

"I expect that operation to move smoothly," Mohamed ElBaradei was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. "I am quite optimistic that this is a good step in the right direction," he reportedly told reporters.

ElBaradei said Wednesday IAEA nuclear inspectors will arrive in North Korea on Saturday to verify the shutdown and sealing of the nuclear facilities in Yongbyon, about 90 kilometers north of Pyongyang.
