Nissan, Honda to cut Monday output on supply woes
TOKYO, July 20 (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.
said it would halt production on Monday at all of its plants
while Honda Motor Co. Ltd. plans to stop output at three
factories after an earthquake cut supplies from a parts maker.
All eight of Japan's carmakers have announced some domestic
production shutdowns this week because of the supply problems at
Riken Corp. which makes piston rings and seal rings for
transmission parts.
Tokyo-based Riken said late on Thursday it was "doing
everything possible" to resume partial production early next week
once it finishes inspecting and testing the plants' equipment.
It plans to release another update later on Friday.
The car assemblers plan to make up for lost output in August
or later, and analysts said they expect little long-term impact
on their business.
In addition to stopping production at three assembly plants,
Honda said it would also halt output from a motorcycle line at
another factory and from an engine line at a separate line.
The 6.8 magnitude quake on Monday killed 10 people and
damaged homes and factories in northwestern Japan.
