Toddler dies after being left in car for 3 hours in Kitakyushu
(Kyodo) _ A 2-year-old boy from a private nursery school in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, died apparently of heatstroke Friday after being left for over three hours in its vehicle, the police said.
At around 5:30 p.m. firefighters received an emergency call from a 41-year-old care worker. When medics rushed to a parking lot of a spa facility about 240 meters from the nursery, they found Haruto Hamasaki, from the privately managed Nakai Nursery, severely dehydrated and unconscious in the minivan.
Haruto was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead, the police said.
The police were questioning Toshikazu Kitamura, head of the nursery school and employees on a voluntary basis on suspicion of professional negligence resulting in the death.
The nursery took its 20 toddlers by vehicle to a park about 550 meters away on an excursion in the morning. The vehicle returned to the nursery around 1:30 p.m., according to investigations.
Around 4 p.m., a care worker began to look for Haruto when they could not find him.
Another employee from the center moved the minivan to the spa facility around 5 p.m. but failed to notice Haruto was left in the vehicle, the police said, adding that another care worker found him lying in the vehicle minutes later.
