Myanmar names ambassador to N. Korea

(Kyodo) _ Myanmar's junta on Wednesday named its ambassador to North Korea following the resumption of diplomatic ties between the two countries earlier this year, a state-run newspaper reported.

The ruling military council appointed its current ambassador to China, Thein Lwin, to serve concurrently as ambassador to North Korea, a brief report in the New Light of Myanmar daily said.

Thein Lwin has been serving as ambassador to China since June 2003.

Myanmar and North Korea severed diplomatic relations after North Korean agents attacked a South Korean delegation in Yangon on Oct. 9, 1983, during an official visit by then South Korean President Chun Doo Hwan.

The two countries resumed diplomatic relations during the visit of North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Yong Il to Yangon in April.
