No. of cars per household in Japan falls for 1st time in FY 2006

(Kyodo) _ The number of passenger cars owned per household in Japan fell for the first time in fiscal 2006, sinking to 1.107 at the end of March due to sluggish sales of larger cars, according to an industry association.

The number of private cars owned by Japanese households came to 57,236,620 as of March 31, up 0.7 percent from a year before, data compiled by the Automobile Inspection & Registration Information Association showed.

The pace of growth represents a sharp deceleration from the preceding 12-month period and fell short of a 1.2 percent expansion in the number of households.

The number of cars includes minivehicles with engines of 660 cc or less.

"Sluggish sales of new standard-sized cars had an effect" on the per-household number of cars, an association official said, referring to the segment with engines of 661 cc to 2000 cc.

The association began compiling data in 1975.

The per-household number of cars exceeded 0.5 for the first time in 1976 and 1.0 in 1996. The number had been growing gradually each year since.

By prefecture, Fukui ranked top in the number of cars per household with 1.766 as of March 31, followed by Toyama, Gunma, Gifu and Yamagata.

In sharp contrast, Tokyo recorded the lowest number of 0.521, apparently due to the convenience of public transport systems, followed by Osaka, Kanagawa, Kyoto and Hyogo.

Meanwhile, the Japan Mini Vehicles Association said the number of minivehicles owned in Japan, including commercial vehicles, hit a record 47.9 per 100 households as of March 31, up from 46.8 a year earlier.

By prefecture, Tottori had the highest number of 95.2 per 100 households, the association added.
