CORRECTED: S. Korea to send advance party on 2nd Korean summit on Sept. 25

(Kyodo) _ South Korea will send an advance party to North Korea on Sept. 25 to do preparatory work before the second Korean summit scheduled for Oct. 2-4 in Pyongyang, Vice Unification Minister Lee Kwan Se said Thursday.

"The dispatch of the advance party will be made Sept. 25, seven days before the (summit) talks," Lee said at a press briefing.

The advance party will visit North Korea via across-border road, the same route President Roh Moo Hyun will use when he visits the North for the summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.

Early preparatory work for the summit, including security, protocol and media coverage, has been conducted through liaison officers at the truce village Panmunjeom, Lee said.

Lee also said a total of 150 members, journalists not included, will be accompanying Roh for the summit to follow the first inter-Korean summit in June, 2000 in Pyongyang.

The first-ever summit between then South Korean President Kim Dae Jung and North Korean leader Kim resulted in a series of unprecedented projects aimed at promoting national reconciliation and economic cooperation.

The second summit, initially set for Aug. 28-30, was postponed at the North's request due to severe flooding in North Korea.

So far, 960,000 people in North Korea have been affected by widespread flooding, landslides and mudslides. More than 450 people have been killed and 170,000 left homeless.
