China to give assistance to N. Korean flood victims
(Kyodo) _ China will provide assistance such as medicine and equipment to North Korea to help the country's flood-stricken victims, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Thursday, without revealing the volume or value of the aid.
China "pays great attention to the situation" in North Korea, Liu Jianchao said in a statement on the ministry's website. The government decided to provide aid "to help the flood victims to overcome difficulties and rebuild their homes," he said.
Hundreds have died or went missing due to the floods triggered by torrential rains that began in early August. The United Nations launched this week a $14 million flash appeal to assist victims of the floods.
