NUS holds life sciences conference with Baden-Wurttemberg universities

SINGAPORE : The National University of Singapore (NUS) held a joint seminar with nine top universities from the German area of Baden-Wurttemberg on Monday.

The inaugural conference on Life Sciences marks the start of a long-term collaboration between the universities. And key to the new tie-up is cooperation in research.

Tapping into research done by experts in Baden-Wurttemberg is one immediate benefit for NUS, thanks to its MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with nine universities.

The unusual tie-up will also allow NUS to learn how universities in Baden-Wurttemberg collaborate with the industry to get results.

The Education Minister said this is the model Singapore aims to establish.

"You have, I believe, 79% or 80% of your research funded by the private sector, which is significantly higher than in the case of Singapore. So this is something which we intend to work towards," said Education Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

And working towards gaining access into one of the best research and educational institutions in the region is what the Baden-Wurttemberg universities stand to gain, with NUS as a partner.

"We are relying very much on the cooperation with high potential regions all over the world to bring the best universities, research universities together and closely cooperate with states with a very high-level of research and academic education. So that's why we are looking at Singapore," said Dr Peter Frankenberg, Baden-Wurttemberg State Minister.

But there are more opportunities for collaboration lined up. These include environmental technology, sustainable energy, nanotechnology and water management.

Already, the next NUS-Baden-Wurttemberg conference is set to be held in October 2008 in Germany.

Besides knowledge sharing, there are also plans for student and staff exchanges.

All this is possible following the collective MOU signed in May last year, between the NUS and the universities of Freiburg, Heidelberg, Hohenheim, Karlsruhe, Konstanz, Mannheim, Stuttgart, Tubingen and Ulm. - CNA /ls
