Wakeboarding: S'porean wins bronze at Wakeboard World Championships

SINGAPORE : 14-year-old Sasha Christian won her first world title medal at the 2007 Wakeboard World Championships in Doha.

The win is also Singapore's first medal in the sport at a world championship.

Competing in the Girls Division (under 14 years), Christian surprisingly edged out USA's Raimi Merritt in the final round of competition.

Christian achieved her third spot by landing all her difficult tricks except one.

The Singapore Waterski & Wakeboard Federation is excited about the results, having placed much emphasis on youth development over the past few years. Sasha was one of the beneficiaries.

Hopes are high for Christian to win a gold medal at the next world championships in 2009.

The Singaporean, a student at the Singapore Sports School, was one of 127 athletes from 24 countries competing in the Wakeboard World Championships.

Top professional riders Andrew Adkinson and Dallas Friday from the USA were crowned the Open Men's and Open Women's World Champions. - CNA /ls
