Nobel Laureate Gao Xingjian in Singapore to launch art exhibition
SINGAPORE: Gao Xingjian, the first Chinese winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, is now in Singapore. But instead of displaying his literary works, Mr Gao is here to exhibit his artworks. The writer-cum-artist last visited Singapore 19 years ago. He discovered his talents for writing and painting in his childhood, but stopped working on his oil paintings in 1978 when he got acquainted with Renaissance art in Europe. "It was then that I felt the emotions that the techniques and colours of these classic oil paintings evoked. I felt we, Asians, cannot compete with them in classic oil paintings," said the Nobel Laureate. A strong advocate for a unique style, Mr Gao refused to create works similar to his ink-painting predecessors.
His efforts have paid off as his ink-and-wash art pieces are now being showcased in museums worldwide. Mr Gao feels that categorising artworks should not be a selling point for Chinese artists. He said: "It is best to take away the idea of 'Chinese contemporary art' and let the works speak for themselves." Mr Gao has donated his painting, titled "Day And Night", to the Singapore Art Museum. - CNA/so
