Saturday December 1, 1:47 AMImports of China canned pork stopped since Aug: food importersSINGAPORE: Food importers told Channel NewsAsia they have stopped importing all canned pork products from China since August, despite the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority's (AVA) import suspension of only two Chinese food establishments in August this year.The suspension came after the AVA detected a banned antibiotic, Nitrofuran, in the canned pork of two Chinese food establishments. Nitrofuran has been known to cause cancer. Retailers have taken popular brands like Maling and Narcissus off the shelf since the AVA's suspension of the two processing plants. Still, AVA said Singapore importers could bring in canned pork products from six other approved food establishments in China. But food importers have taken the suspension further and have stopped importing from China altogether. Supermarket chains like Sheng Siong, which has 21 outlets across the island, said it has not been able to import canned pork products from China for weeks. Retailers said alternative sources from western countries could cost up to two times more. Besides the higher cost, choices are also limited for canned pork products outside of China. Some popular Chinese dishes such as stewed pork are unobtainable as they are not produced by western food makers. Should consumers still have leftover Maling and Narcissus canned pork products, and are wondering if they are safe for consumption, AVA has stated that products which it has allowed into Singapore have been checked and approved for food safety. - CNA/yb |
