Gustav Klimt reproductions at charity auction for needy children

SINGAPORE : Only the really wealthy can afford Gustav Klimt originals which cost millions of dollars.

So a lacquer reproduction priced at about S$400 can be considered a bargain.

And these bargains can be found at a charity auction at The Arts House.

Called 'Art from the Heart', the charity auction and sale will see proceeds go to underprivileged children in Singapore.

This initiative is the brain-child of Singaporean Paul Fong, who set up Christie Collection as a social enterprise to export lacquer paintings produced by a Vietnamese welfare organisation.

The charitable organisation is the Thien An Centre which houses and trains street-children and orphans as artists.

These works are popular with art aficionados as lacquer paintings, unlike oil paintings, do not fade with time.

Mr Fong is also looking to set up a social enterprise in Singapore next year to support budding artists and needy children.

Mr Fong said: "For the young talents and for also artists who are practitioners themselves, they have difficulties making money. But in my own way, I think I can help them by producing their work into lacquer and therefore they can market and make a profit."

Meanwhile, the six lacquer art paintings, which are enhanced with egg-shell, gold dust and mother-of-pearl elements, are up for silent bidding as well as phone bidding.

Bidding closes on Sunday (December 23) at 7pm and winners will be announced at 7.30pm.

This is the first of three charity auctions by Christie Collection.

The second exhibition and auction will be held on February 2 and 3 respectively, while the third exhibition and auction will be held on March 15 and 16 respectively. - CNA/ch
