Barbie dolls collected as presents for children in rural China
SINGAPORE: The Nanyang family of schools and others have donated 4,500 Barbie dolls that will make their way to rural China as Christmas presents for little girls. The Barbie dolls will be given to children who have been left behind in rural China as their parents leave to work in the cities. The move is part of a charity drive organised by the Concern and Care Society. Its volunteers, mostly senior citizens, washed and mended the clothes of the donated dolls. Collection has been going on for the past two months and it has exceeded the original target of 3,000 dolls. "Our CEO went to China and found out that all these children, who are left with their grandparents, … lack parental love… We thought that since we are doing social work, we might as well do something (for) these children so they will feel that they are still loved even if their parents are not with them," said Concern and Care Society’s president Margaret Wee. - CNA/ac
