Motorsports Carnival goes to the heartlands in Punggol

SINGAPORE: It's not every day that drivers are given the liberty to speed on a public road but that is exactly what they did in Punggol on Sunday morning.

It is all part of the activities planned to generate excitement for Singapore's first Formula One night race.

The F1 Grand Prix, which will be held at Marina, is less than a year away and a series of carnivals has been planned to bring the excitement of motorsports to Singaporeans in the heartlands.

Peh Chin Keong said: "We're staying nearby and my son actually heard the engine sounds so he was very excited and he wanted to come down here and take a look. He loves racing cars."

"My son loves to play with cars. He wants to try out the go-karts, but unfortunately he's too young," said Chan Chun Kwong.

Not to be left out, Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean and his parliamentary colleagues also took the opportunity to go for a few spins around the go-kart track.

Mr Teo said: "That's good fun! I'm usually a very safe driver. This is the first time I'm trying the go-kart. You're much closer to the ground, so you're practically sitting on the ground. The sensation of speed is a lot faster."

For those who have missed out on the fast action at Punggol, they could look forward to many more of such carnivals around the island in the coming months leading up to Singapore's first F1 race next year.

The next Motorsports Carnival is scheduled for January 2008 at Ayer Rajah.
