Snow may fall in some Pacific coastal areas on New Year day

(Kyodo) _ Snow is expected to fall in some Pacific coastal areas through New Year's day on Tuesday, while heavy snow is forecasted in a wide area on the Sea of Japan coast, the Japan Meteorological Agency said Monday.

Snow may cause traffic disruptions and caution is urged due to strong winds and high waves as a strong wintry atmospheric pressure system is covering Japan, the agency said.

Up to 100 centimeters of snow may fall in the Hokuriku region and up to 80 cm on the Sea of Japan side of the Tohoku region, as well as in Gifu Prefecture in the 24 hours through Tuesday morning, it said.

Snow is expected to reach 60-70 cm in the Koshin region and 40-50 cm in the Kanto region, the northern part of the Kinki region and Hokkaido, the agency said.

The wind continues to be strong across the nation, with maximum winds of 46.8-64.8 kilometers per hour expected on land and 64.8-82.8 kph at sea with waves of 4-6 meters, it said.
