46% hope for DPJ victory in next general election: daily
(Kyodo) _ Forty-six percent of pollees hope the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan will win the next general election while 33 percent hope for a victory by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, the Mainichi Shimbun reported Sunday.
The major daily said the results of its December poll show the LDP faces growing public criticism for its response to pension-record blunders and a series of scandals involving the Defense Ministry.
The DPJ's lead of 13 percentage points over the LDP is wider than its 7-point advantage in the August survey conducted shortly after the House of Councillors election in late July, the paper said.
In the upper house election, the DPJ recorded a landslide victory and the opposition camp won the majority of the chamber. There is growing speculation that Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda will dissolve the House of Representatives this year and call a general election.
The Mainichi Shimbun survey showed 82 percent of those polled are interested in the possible lower house election and only 14 percent are not interested in it.
The paper said 51 percent replied they will place greatest priority on policies when casting ballots for lower house candidates, followed by 15 percent who stressed personalities and 11 percent who put the emphasis on the political parties to which they belong.
The survey found 49 percent said they could reduce their quality of life in order to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions to fight against global warming, topping 41 percent who replied they could not.
