SingTel, others to build $300mln submarine cable system

SINGAPORE, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Singapore Telecommunications said on Tuesday that it has entered an agreement with five international telecommunications carriers to build a ultra high-speed cable system worth $300 million.

The 10,000 km (6,200 mile) submarine system, named Unity, will link the United States to Japan.

Other carriers involved in the project include Bharti Airtel , Globe Transit, Google , KDDI Corp and Pacnet, SingTel said in a statement.

The cable system is expected to be ready for service in the first quarter of 2010, it said. (Reporting by Daryl Loo; Editing by Jan Dahinten)
