TOKYO (AFP) - A 42-year-old Japanese man stabbed his parents and his wife to death, and also seriously injured his two sons during a family dispute in a quiet Tokyo neighbourhood, police and reports said Friday.

The man, identified by local media as Masao Enari, was also wounded in the chest and abdomen after attempting suicide in the overnight attack, public broadcaster NHK said.

"The three were rushed to hospital but confirmed dead there," a police spokeswoman said, adding the victims were yet to be identified.

But NHK and private networks said the dead were Enari's 37-year-old wife, Nobuko, his father Mitsuo, 74, and mother Toshiko, 70.

The man has told the police that he committed the stabbings, NHK and Jiji Press news agency said.

NHK and private networks said seven people were living in the house -- Enari, his wife, parents, daughter and two sons, aged eight and four, who were also hurt in the attack.

The man's 12 year-old daughter managed to flee unharmed to a neighbour's house, NHK said.

Tokyo police said they received an emergency call shortly past midnight and found the victims in the three-story house.
