S'pore Art Museum and YDY Foundation set up contemporary art centre
SINGAPORE: With Asian contemporary art in the spotlight, the Singapore Art Museum and Indonesia's YDY Foundation, led by art collector and philanthropist Budi Tek, have jointly set up a new contemporary art centre in Beijing. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Saturday afternoon. Singapore's National Heritage Board said the new centre will give the art museum another platform to showcase Singapore and Southeast Asian Arts. The new centre is in Song Village, an artist colony just outside Beijing. It's currently home to more than 1500 artists, many of whom are highly sought-after for their contemporary art pieces. Founders of the new art centre hope that when the centre is ready in 2009, it will bring together artists, curators, critics and collectors to discuss and research Asian contemporary art. The Singapore Art Museum will take care of the new centre's programming including exhibitions and talks. Mr Budi's Foundation will cover the construction and operational costs of the centre in its initial years. - CNA/vm
