Sunday May 4, 4:45 PMSeven killed in S.Korean tidal wave: coastguard
The powerful wave hit a breakwater and swept people into the water near Boryeong, a town 200 kilometres (124 miles) southwest of Seoul, according to the Taean coastguard. "Seven have been killed so far, with 13 others rescued," Yang Sun-Kyu, a coastguard official handling the case, told AFP. Yang said patrol boats were searching the area because the coastguard had yet to establish the total number of those swept away. Yonhap news agency said at least two people are still missing while 14 others were injured. It said they were rescued by fishing boats and taken to hospital in Boryeong. "The sea water receded like an ebb tide before two-metre-high (6.6 foot) waves rushed to the breakwater and rocks to sweep the anglers and tourists into the water," it quoted one witness as saying. The cause of the tidal wave was not immediately known. The weather office had warned of strong winds in the country's southwest. |
