Cebu's Backyard Hog Farmers Urged to Form Own Group

CEBU CITY, May 13 Asia Pulse - A Philippines' hog farmers group is encouraging Cebu backyard hog raisers to organize themselves into a group and sell their hogs together to ensure profits.

Albert R. T. Lim, Jr., president of the National Federation of Hog Farmers Inc. (NFHFI), the largest hog farmers group in the Philippines, said that by organizing themselves into a group, the backyard hog raisers can earn more profits because hog buyers and "viajeros" could not take advantage of them.

"It's time that producers should organize so that the other people won't take advantage of them," Lim said during the recent 1st Backyard Hog Farmers Congress at the Cebu International Convention Center.

Through grouping and uniting themselves and selling their hogs together, Lim explained, that the backyard farmers can get a good price from the buyer for selling in big volumes.

He said if backyard hog raisers only sell one or two hogs, the buyers or viajeros often manipulate the agreement and dictate the price.

"It is important to get backyard hog farmers to form a group so they can demand a good price for their hogs. With a sizeable quantity of hogs, they can sit down and bargain with the buyer," Lim said.

Lim said the first Backyard Hog Farmers Congress was held to recognize the vital role the backyard farmers play in the hog industry of the Philippines, since they continue 70 percent of the total hog producers compared to only 30 percent of the commercial raisers.

Hog raisers in last month's congress were given seminars on the modern ways of swine production and management.

The 17th Hog Convention and Trade Exhibit aims to provide hog raisers with the knowledge of various methods and resources, which they can sue in boosting their businesses in the country and help their attempts at penetrating the export market.

The annual event is part of NFHFI's mission to protect and promote the hog farmers and enhance opportunities for growth, efficiency, equity and sustainability of the country's hog industry.

Meanwhile, the Aboitiz Group Foundation Inc. (AGFI) has been giving assistance to a small-scale swine fattening program for beneficiaries in Cebu.

The foundation's program partner is Fil-Am Foods Inc., the Aboitizfeed milling company based in Capas, Tarlac.

The foundation said in a statement that it provides the training and feeds to the beneficiary groups.

AGFI has since granted loans totaling P13 million to organized groups for their swine-fattening activities. These loans help these groups in their capital build-up requirements.

AGFI said the program also helps sustain the supply of meat products in the local market.
