Constant Increase in Indonesiai-Hong Kong Trade

: OFFICIAL

BEIJING, May 14 Asia Pulse - Trade relations between Indonesia and Hong Kong have steadily increased over the past four years with Indonesia mostly enjoying a surplus, an Indonesian trade official said.

"The trade balance between Indonesia and Hong Kong keeps on increasing and we have always enjoyed a surplus," Indonesian Trade Consul in Hong Kong Haris Munandar said when reached by phone from here on Tuesday.

He said the total trade value between the two increased from US$2.85 billion in 2004 to US$3.18 billion in 2005, to US$3.34 billion in 2006 and to US$3.89 billion in 2006.

Of the amount, Hong Kong's import from Indonesia was recorded at US$1.74 billion in 2004 and it increased to US$1.92 billion in 2005 and remained at the level in 2006 and increased again to US$2.07 billion in 2007.

Meanwhile, exports from Hong Kong to Indonesia were recorded at US$1.10 billion in 2004 and increased to US$1.26 billion in 2005, to US$1.42 billion in 2006 and to US$1.81 billion in 2007.

"And thus, Indonesia always enjoyed a surplus, although the amount tended to decrease," he added.

The surplus was recorded at US$ 638.64 million in 2004, and US$657.35 million in 2005, and US$ 493.92 million in 2006 and US$262.41 million in 2007.

Among the commodities Hong Kong imported from Indonesia in 2007 were electronic products and recording equipment, textiles, fish and sea food products, rubber and its products, shoes, coffee, tea, cocoa, spices, furniture and automotive components.

Haris added Indonesia's chances to increase its exports to Hong Kong remained open as there were no obstacles in the Hong Kong market.

Besides, he added, Hong Kong was a world exhibition center and thus almost all foreign buyers seeking commodities in the region regularly come to Hong Kong. Moreover, he said, Hong Kong was a member of CEPA (Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement).

"It means that the chances to supply industrial raw material to the Chinese and Macao markets are open," he said.
