Epsom Derby favourite beaten in York trial
LONDON (Reuters) - Twice Over, pre-race 4-1 favourite for
the Epsom Derby, was beaten into third place in the Dante
Stakes at York on Thursday and may miss the classic.
Ridden by Ted Durcan for trainer Henry Cecil, Twice Over
started 4-6 favourite and joined issue 400 metres from home.
But the colt could not hold off Tartan Bearer (10-1) and
Frozen Fire (14-1) and was beaten by a head and 2 1/2 lengths.
Tartan Bearer, ridden by Ryan Moore, is trained by Michael
Stoute who did the Dante/Derby double in 2004 with North Light.
Bookmakers reacted to Thursday's upset by taking Twice Over
out of the Epsom betting and quoting Tartan Bearer as 6-1 joint
favourite with Curtain Call, trained by Luca Cumani.
Three of the last four Dante Stakes winners went on to
score at Epsom, including Authorized in 2007. The Derby is on
June 7.
