Local artistes release single to raise funds for Sichuan quake victims
SINGAPORE : Preparations are on a roll for a charity concert on Sunday to raise money for victims of the earthquake in China.Ahead of the big concert, 40 Singapore artistes have recorded a single to raise funds for the quake victims. The music single - titled "Don't Let Go" - took 12 days to complete. The song was specially written for the victims of the Sichuan earthquake. Besides the tight deadline, songwriter Jiu Jian said the other challenge was getting all the artistes, musicians and production crew to gather at one place for the recording session. Jiu said he hopes to sell at least 10,000 copies of the single, which is priced at S$10 each. All proceeds from the sale of the single will go to the Singapore Red Cross. Also lending their voices for the same cause are MediaCorp artistes who have been busy recording a song for Sunday's charity concert.
"It's pretty rushed because we only received all the lyrics of the song we had to sing for the recording today. It's tough and difficult for us, but I think this is one of the ways we can contribute," said MediaCorp artiste Zhang Yadong. For actor Ben Yeo, who has friends in Chengdu, the disaster also affected him personally. "They told me how they spent their nights in the rain. They can't go home because there are still (aftershocks). Hopefully we can help by doing this charity show," said Yeo. The show on Sunday will also feature national bowler Remy Ong, and other members of Team Singapore such as Sportsgirl of the Year Jazreel Tan, who will be helping to man the donation hotline. Also making a special appearance are officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force, who will talk about their rescue efforts in Sichuan. Ahead of Sunday's concert, many Singaporeans have shown their concern by penning their thoughts on this dedications board at Paragon Shopping Centre. It was only put up on Friday, but the project has received an overwhelming support. "While we count our blessings, I think we should reach out to those who are in need of our love and care. I think this is a very good way to express our concern, and at the same time, (help) them rebuild their homes as soon as they can," said MediaCorp CEO Lucas Chow. Photos of the board will be sent to China to let the quake victims know that they are very much in the thoughts of the people in Singapore. The charity concert will be beamed "live" from the MediaCorp studios on Channel 8 at 7pm on Sunday. Members of the public can call 1900-1125121 for a S$6 donation; 1900-1125122 for an S$18 donation, and 1900-1125123 for a S$50 donation. - CNA /ls
