S'pore and Thailand resume joint civil service exchange programme

BANGKOK: Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo met his Thai counterpart in Bangkok on Sunday to resume a joint civil service exchange programme after a year-long hiatus.

The Thailand-Singapore Civil Service Exchange Programme (CSEP) will resume later this year.

It brings together senior civil servants from both countries to discuss bilateral issues, exchange ideas and enhance co-operation.

The programme was suspended in 2007 after Thailand's military leaders took exception to critical comments from Singapore regarding the September 2006 coup.

Also to reconvene is the Singapore-Thailand Enhanced Economic Relationship meeting, which aims for greater economic co-operation in agriculture, life sciences, automotive and financial services.

Mr Yeo said: "We reviewed our bilateral account. There are no problems. We talked mostly about how we can move the bilateral relationship forward. CSEP is an important programme of co-operation which should break new ground.

"We discussed ASEAN and the handing of the chairmanship to Thailand at the end of next month. We also reviewed the situation in Myanmar and the good work done by Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan." - CNA/vm
