Malaysia's Halal Devt Corp Issues Certificates for 38 Thai Products

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 Asia Pulse - Malaysia's Halal Development Corporation (HDC) has issued 'halal' (permissible by Islam) certificates for 38 products of Thai multinationals since being set up in eptember 2006.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, S. K. Devamany said the products included fat and oil-based products and make-up items.

"HDC was established for the purpose of making Malaysia the world's halal hub," he said in reply to a question in Parliament here Tuesday.

In April, HDC was given the mandate by the Malaysian cabinet to take over the role of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) for the issuing of 'halal' certificates in the country.

HDC is also responsible for issuing international 'halal' certificates.
