Pakistan Produces 4.69 MLN Tons Vegetables Yearly: Workshop

LAHORE, July 3 Asia Pulse - Pakistan produces more than 4.69 million ton vegetables annually but per capita availability is about 29.33 kg / annual only which is far less than internationally accepted minimum consumption i.e. 73 kg and this gap is widening because of burgeoning population.

Additional Secretary, Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Livestock Pakistan Raja Shahid Hussain stated this as chief guest at concluding session of Curricula Development Workshop on Tunnel Vegetables organized by Centre for Applied Bio-sciences International (CABI) South Asia at local hotel in Islamabad. The workshop was attended by agricultural scientists from all four provinces, experts involved in Fruit and Vegetable Development Project Punjab and progressive vegetable growers.

The Additional Secretary MINFAL further said that vegetables and fruits are important source of nutrition and essential gradient of daily diet of human beings. He emphasized to improve situation by producing off- season vegetables through tunnel technology. He hoped that ongoing Fruit and Vegetable Development Project being implemented by the Agriculture Department Punjab will succeed in promotion of tunnel technology for vegetables forcing / producing off-season vegetables.

He congratulated CABI for organizing successful workshop on Curricula Development for tunnel vegetables. The experts in workshop proposed to develop new extension model best suited to our socio-economic environment for efficient technology transfer to farmers.
