Malaysian Police Wants to Make Malaysia Regional Training Hub

KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 Asia Pulse - The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) is forging cooperation with a number of foreign police training colleges in an effort to make Malaysia a regional police training centre.

Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan said through its training college, PDRM had established smart partnerships with police training colleges abroad, including the FBI Institute in New York, and the police training colleges of Australia and Indonesia to enhance knowledge in the field at the regional and international level.

"Such cooperation has helped, especially in exchange of information and strengthening investigative prodecures and technology, particularly in forensic science and crime scene investigation," he said after launching the Social Science Master's (Police Studies) and Diploma programmes for the 2008/2009 session, here Thursday.

He said the PDRM College had received many foreign participants, especially for the Master's programme and the Senior Command Course.

For the police science course, the college accepts foreign students such as from Brunei and Indonesia, while for the Senior Command Course, the participants include from the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Arab countries and Vietnam.

Musa said to further enhance the quality of programmes at the college in keeping with current developments, a new diploma programme in strategic and intelligence science was being planned for inclusion.

"We are still discussing the programme and will be getting the cooperation of the Malaysian Armed Forces and the universities." He said the PDRM College was also restructuring its existing training programmes and courses so that they would remain relevant with the times, especially in such aspects as integrity, investigation, intelligence, and crisis, disaster and violence management.

For the programme launched Thursday, there will be 20 participants for the Master's programme and 43 for the diploma course. They comprise officers from PDRM, Malaysian Armed Forces, Anti-Corruption Agency and from Brunei.
