TAIPEI (AFP) - Two people were missing while land and rail traffic was disrupted as Tropical Storm Typhoon Kalmaegi lashed Taiwan on Friday with strong wind and downpours.

A couple went missing when a rescue boat carrying them away from a flooded area in southern Tainan capsized, said an official with the local county fire department.

Local cable news FTV reported that a woman was rescued from her house in the southern city of Kaohsiung after it was hit by a mudslide but her two relatives were still buried under the rubble.

The storm was 30 kilometres (18 miles) west-northwest of Taipei at 8:30 am (0030 GMT), packing winds of up to 83 kilometres an hour, the weather bureau said.

Kalmaegi was downgraded from a typhoon to a tropical storm as it bore down the east coast Thursday night and was moving away from the island although torrential rains were expected on Friday, the bureau said.

Television footage showed residents in various parts of southern and central Taiwan battling floods while a road in central Nantou was blocked by mudslides.

Offices and schools in several central counties shut while some rail services were cancelled due to flooding, authorities said.
