Olympics: Japan's delegation head aims high at Beijing Games
(Kyodo) _ The head of the Japanese delegation for the Beijing Olympics said Friday the country's target at the upcoming Summer Games is to achieve a record-breaking medals haul, including 10 or more gold medals.
Tomiaki Fukuda, a senior Japanese Olympic Committee official, said after a meeting with officials of domestic sports federations that Japan's goal is to "win double-digit gold medals and exceed (its) total medal count in Athens."
At the 2004 Athens Games, Japan won 16 golds, nine silvers and 12 bronzes for a total of 37 medals, the most ever in the country's Olympic history.
According to the JOC, more than 330 athletes and 235 officials have been named to Japan's delegation for the Beijing Olympics, surpassing the previous record number assembled for the Athens Games.
