Komura to meet Chinese, U.S. counterparts on sidelines of ASEAN talks

(Kyodo) _ Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura will meet bilaterally with his Chinese and U.S. counterparts on the sidelines of a series of meetings related to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Singapore next week, a Japanese Foreign Ministry official said Friday.

Komura, who will arrive in Singapore on Monday, is set to hold one-on-one talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Tuesday morning, the official said. Talks with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have also been scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

The talks are likely to focus on coordinating efforts to move the North Korean denuclearization process forward, amid growing speculation that the three ministers, together with their counterparts from North and South Korea, and Russia -- all members of the six-party nuclear talks -- will get together while they are in Singapore.

The ministers will be in Singapore for foreign ministerial talks hosted by the 10-member ASEAN grouping, including the ASEAN Regional Forum.

Arrangements are also under way for Komura to hold a separate meeting with his counterparts from Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam during his stay, another ministry official said.
