Volleyball: Japan coasts past China in World League

(Kyodo) _ Kunihiro Shimizu and Yu Koshikawa combined to rack up 27 spike points to lead Japan to a straight-sets victory over China in the men's volleyball World League on Saturday.

Japan, ranked 12th in the world, took a closely fought first set in the Group D match and went on to beat the 21st-ranked Asian rival 26-24, 25-20, 25-13 at Osaka Municipal Central Gymnasium, leaving both teams at 5-6 with one game left in the first round.

The final round of the World League will be held in Rio de Janeiro on July 23-27 featuring six teams, including host Brazil and the winners of four first-round groups. Japan has been given a place in the final round as a wild card.
