Thursday August 7, 8:13 PMClear skies for opening round at Oakland Hills
American Bradley Dean ended up in the left rough with the opening shot at the par-four first before being followed by compatriot Briny Baird and Britain's Alastair Forsyth. World number two Phil Mickelson, tournament favourite in the absence of title holder Tiger Woods, was scheduled to start from the 10th hole at 8:45 a.m. local time (1:45 p.m. British time). Left-hander Mickelson, the 2005 champion at Baltusrol, has been grouped with fellow Americans and former winners Davis Love III and Rich Beem for the first two rounds. Woods, who claimed last year's title by two shots in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was sidelined for the rest of 2008 after having reconstructive knee surgery following his U.S. Open triumph in June. British Open champion Padraig Harrington of Ireland was set to tee off from the first at 1315 (1715) with Masters winner Trevor Immelman of South Africa and Argentina's Angel Cabrera. Among the later starters, South African world number five Ernie Els faced a 1355 (1755) tee-off from the first, in the company of Australian Adam Scott and American Fred Couples. In other high-profile groupings, fourth-ranked Fijian Vijay Singh has been drawn with former winners David Toms and John Daly of the U.S. while Australian Geoff Ogilvy will play with Britain's Lee Westwood and American Zach Johnson. The PGA Championship has, in recent years, enjoyed the strongest field of the four majors and 93 of the world's top 100 players are chasing the season's final grand slam title this week. Weather forecasts expect conditions to become partially cloudy later in the day with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. (Editing by Clare Fallon) |
