Police obtain arrest warrants for 2 men over murder in Thailand

(Kyodo) _ Gifu prefectural police have obtained arrest warrants for two men on suspicion of withdrawing money from the bank account of a man whose body was found abandoned in Thailand in August, the police said Thursday.

The two are a 31-year-old from Ichinomiya, Aichi Prefecture, and a 30-year-old from Suita, Osaka Prefecture, both acquaintances of Takahide Tanahashi, the 33-year-old Gifu man murdered in Thailand, they said.

According to police investigations, the two withdrew a total of about 10 million yen from an automated teller machine in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, early last month.

An autopsy conducted in Japan showed that Tanahashi died by drowning and the police concluded he was killed in Thailand based on injuries sustained to his head and chest from being beaten with a hard object. His body was found in Thailand on Aug. 9.

Thai police had obtained an arrest warrant for the two on suspicion of killing Tanahashi from Yamagata, Gifu Prefecture, but the suspects have returned to Japan.

The Japanese police dispatched investigators to Thailand and they have been probing the case as the Thai arrest warrant is not effective in Japan.
