Putin visit to Japan by year-end unlikely due to financial crisis
(Kyodo) _ A visit to Japan by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is unlikely to take place in December due to the global financial crisis, government sources said Tuesday.
A Japan-China high-level economic dialogue forum is also likely to be delayed to next year as the both sides believe a session within the year will not suit their schedules, the sources said.
Japan is hoping that the two events will take place early next year, according to a senior Foreign Ministry official.
Japan and Russia had been seeking to arrange Putin's visit around Dec. 20 after agreeing in July that the prime minister would visit Japan by the end of the year.
Putin is apparently prioritizing domestic affairs as the Russian economy has been deteriorating along with falling stock and oil prices, they said.
The Japan-China forum, the second of its kind, was to be held in late November but China postponed the dialogue session citing a meeting on domestic economic matters.
China sounded out Japan on holding the meeting in late December but the Japanese government will be busy with budget compilation at that time, the sources said.
